During Krakow's Juwenalia festivities, students rule the streets with parties and parades. In a tradition dating back to medieval times, the mayor hands the students his keys to the city in Market Square on the Friday of this week-long event.
Throughout Juwenalia, students swap their everyday wardrobes for the obligatory fancy dress, while the city brims with concerts, parades, art exhibitions and shows, including a "Miss Juwenalia" contest.
Predictably, heavy drinking sessions are also a big part of the festival, often starting in the afternoon and continuing through the night at the city's bars and clubs.
