Gdansk is the only Polish city to have two impressive carillons and is thus best placed to host the Carillon Festival. One is the carillon of the Town Hall, the other the concert bell set at St Catherine's Church.
This festival is another example of the city reviving its ancient traditions, and its programmes are mostly made up of solo concerts. The repertoire provides a cross-section of the exquisite masterpieces of the rich carillon-music literature, from Baroque pieces by Johann Sebastian Bach to 20th-century compositions by Arthur Rubinstein.
The Gdañsk instruments are played by carillon virtuosos such as Carl van Eyndhoven, Gert Oldenbeuving and Joost van Balkom from Holland, or Gdansk's own Malgorzata Fiebig-Drzewiecka.
