Norway's most important film festival takes place in Haugesund every year, featuring a large number of national and international film screenings and hosting the Norwegian equivalent of the Oscars - the Amanda Award ceremony.
Since its inception in 1973, this festival has been an important event in the cinematic calendars both of Norway and of Scandinavia. It was initially conceived as a nomadic festival, travelling from city to city to spread interest in contemporary films and cinema.
It was held in nine cities, including Hamar, Kristiansand, Sandefjord and Bergen, but by 1987 it had grown too large to be accommodated comfortably by some. Haugesund provided the necessary resources (and creature comforts) for a festival of its size to be held, and there it has remained.
During the festival, scores of feature films are presented, as well as press conferences, audience encounters with the artists, a New Nordic Films programme, a Children's Film Fest, seminars, professional talks, a festival exhibition and a variety of social and cultural events.
