Oslo's central Munch Museum houses The Scream and Madonna among other paintings by Norwegian Expressionist painter Edvard Munch (1863-1944). Films, lectures and guided tours give deeper insight into the tormented painter's motivations and style.

When Munch died in January 1944, it turned out that he had left all his remaining works to the City of Oslo. Munch's work is the most significant Norwegian contribution to the history of art, and he is the only Norwegian artist who has exercised a decisive influence on European art trends, notably as a pioneer of Expressionism in Germany and the Nordic countries.

The Munch Museum opened in 1963 and was purpose-built to house a unique collection of around 1000 paintings, 4500 drawings and 18,000 prints. Major works are always on display and the selection is changed regularly.

The museum's programme also comprises film screenings, concerts and lectures. These events are held in the lecture hall and are advertised in the daily papers. Finally, there is an educational department, a library, a cafe and a museum shop.
