The UNESCO world heritage site of Bryggen is all that remains of an ancient wharf located on the east side of Bergen, founded by King Olav Kyrre around 1070.
The area was rebuilt in 1702, following a fire that reduced most buildings to ashes. Today only a quarter of the original structure remains, but there are still over 60 protected buildings, ranging from wooden houses to stone store-rooms, that provide a unique insight into the local life from the Middle Ages to the present day.
