The Madurodam miniature city in the Hague has been Holland's tiniest town for more than 50 years. A visit is a special treat for kids, who feel like giants as they walk among the palaces, ships and medieval houses.
Madurodam opened in 1952 and just like a real city has continued to develop ever since. The canal houses of Amsterdam, the Alkmaar cheese market, the Rijksmuseum and Anne Frank's House, among many others, are all reproduced in miniature 1:25 scale, complete with minute detail. In total there are more than 700 buildings, windmills, bridges, trees and trains.
Everything is set in beautiful gardens, which are an integral part of the miniature city's charm and appeal. Borders, tubs and beds are filled with thousands of flowers. Shrubs, hedges and trees are pruned regularly to ensure that they all stay in proportion. There is even a miniature arboretum complete with a variety of trees.
