Surrounded by lakes, canals, arched bridges and exquisite 18th and 19th-century farmhouses, it's no wonder that the village of Giethoorn, in the Dutch province of Overrijssel, is referred to as the "Venice of Holland". Founded by a group of Mediterranean fugitives in 1230, Giethoorn (horn of goats) owes its unique landscape to peat cutting. The digging of peat ponds resulted in lakes and subsequently necessitated canals and intricate waterways. Visitors can enjoy the sight of homes on little islands and tour the village by boats known as punters. The village is also home to a number of museums and attractions.
