Guanajuato perches on the steep slopes of a ravine, while its narrow streets coil around hillsides and burrow underground through a series of tunnels.
After a rich vein of silver was discovered in the 16th century the city went on to become the world's leading supplier of the precious metal for the next 250 years.
Much of the town's fine Baroque and neoclassical architecture remains intact as evidence of the silver mine's prosperity. La Valenciana Church is considered to be one of the most beautiful examples of Baroque architecture in Central America.
