During the Feria del Cedral at the ancient Mayan settlement of El Cedral, locals commemorate the Day of the Holy Cross (Día de la Santa Cruz) with cattle exhibitions, rodeos and bullfights.
The 3 May remembers the arrival of the island's 11 founding families, who escaped to Cozumel from the mainland during The Caste War (La Guerra de Castas) in 1848.
As well as livestock and animal spectacles, there is an abundance of food stalls with choice local cuisine and games and dances to take part in, namely the typical "Head of the Boar" and "The Ribbons".
Please note that if you find the practice of bullfighting unpleasant, then it is advisable to avoid any events of this nature in the festival programme.
