The Malta marathon begins in the medieval town of Mdina and ends at the seaside resort of Sliema.
The run begins at the gates of the medieval city, one of the highest points in Malta, with amazing views over the harbour and the glittering blue sea. The route takes the athletes through Malta's pretty countryside and several towns and villages including Mosta, famed for its massive domed church, which lays a claim to being the fourth largest in the world. A half marathon is organised concurrently.
With an ideal winter climate of temperatures around 15°C-19°C, Malta is gaining a considerable reputation among international athletes as the ideal place to continue training throughout winter, away from the harsh weather further north. Over the years, the number of foreign participants in the race has continued to grow steadily and internationally renowned marathon runners such as Ron Hill and Ian Thomson have run the race several times.
Full programme details can be found on the BMW Malta Marathon website as soon as they are released.
