An ancient shepherd's market, over the centuries Schueberfouer has metamorphosed into a giant funfair. Luxembourg City is rejuvenated by the event, which culminates in a grand people's day and lavish fireworks display.
The Schueberfouer fair was founded by John the Blind - Jean l'Aveugle - Count of Luxembourg, King of Bohemia, and the first in a succession of great rulers that included the Holy Roman Emperor Charles IV. Its humble beginnings were as a shepherd's market back in 1340 and, to commemorate the fact, the modern fair in Luxembourg City features a procession of sheep decorated with coloured ribbons that are herded through the street.
