Luxembourgers have a romantic slant on Easter. Every Easter Monday sees the festival of Eimaischen in the town of Nospelt. A traditional festival and flea market, its unique feature is the exchange of lovers' tokens: little pottery birds that double as whistles, known as peckvillchen.
Nospelt started life as a potter's village and the town grew up around it. As the potters made their plates and crockery, small amounts of clay would be left over at the end of the day, from which they fashioned the little earthenware whistles.
Children in particular flock to the fair. As well as craft stalls, Eimaischen provides an excuse for a great deal of merrymaking, with partying in the streets and folk dancing shows. A special marquee is erected for the purpose.
