Established in 1997, the Vilnius Festival brings the best in classical music from across Europe and beyond to the Lithuanian capital. With a dozen concerts and productions it has become one of the mainstays of the city's annual programme.
The 2008 event celebrates the communication between people of different backgrounds, cultures and mindsets with a focus on the European Year of Intercultural Dialogue. Not just an invitation for Europeans, jazz-rock group Return to Forever from America, Chinese piano player Yundi Li and other international acts perform. The concerts present music from the 16th-18th century ranging from Spanish music to Dutch jazz.
Each year there is a major commission from a Lithuanian composer. In 2007 it was Raminta erknyte's cantata-oratorio Songs of Sunset and Dawn, performed by the Lithuanian National Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Robertas ervenikas.
For full details of the forthcoming festival, keep an eye on the Vilnius Festivals and Lithuanian National Philharmonic Society websites.
