Occupying nearly 20 hectares of the posh Meaparks neighbourhood, Riga Zoo houses hundreds of animals from wolves, polar bears and kangaroos to lions and giraffes. There's also a modern tropical building housing insects, rare birds and reptiles.
The first zoo in the Baltic states, Riga Zoo was founded in 1912 and boasts over 475 animal species, including eight breeds of bear, Tibetan wild donkeys and an alligator dating back to 1935!
Visitors can take a turn-of-the-century tram from the centre of Riga to the zoo's grounds, and then explore the surrounding Forest Park area, a popular strolling ground for local residents.
