First held in 1996, Riga's International Baltic Ballet Festival every spring brings the best in dance to Latvia's capital. Performances take place throughout the city.
Riga can claim a remarkable track record in dance. Dancers of the calibre as Maris Liepa, Aleksander Godunov, Vladimir Gelvan and Mikhail Baryshnikov - popularly thought to be of the Soviet school - were all born in Riga and fist studied there before moving either to Moscow and the Bolshoi (Liepa, Godunov and Gelvan) or Leningrad and the Kirov (Baryshnikov).
In 2007 visiting companies came to Riga from France (Jose Montalvo and Dominique Hervieu's joyous re-evaluation of the baroque music of Jean-Philippe Rameau On Danse), Spain (Ballet Flamenco de Madrid), America (Giordano Jazz Dance Chicago) and Cambodia (Cambodian Dance Theatre). Venues included not only the Latvian National Opera House, but also Riga Railway Station, the Daile Theatre and the New Riga Theatre.
Keep an eye on the International Baltic Ballet Festival website for news of the next festival.
