Latvia's very own Statue of Liberty was crafted by local sculptor Kârlis Zâle and erected in 1935 during a brief period of independence between the wars. The 42-metre Freedom Monument stands in downtown Riga and is topped by Lady Liberty (or Milda as she is affectionately known), holding aloft three golden stars symbolising the three regions of Latvia: Kurzeme, Vidzeme and Latgale. Left intact by the Soviets, the tower remains a powerful symbol for the people and flowers are regularly left at its base.
