Home to some of Michelangelo's best-known masterpieces, the Galleria dell'Accademia in Florence is one of the most visited art galleries in Italy.
Among the top attractions is the world-famous statue of David, a colossal figure (standing at 4.34m/14 ft 3 in tall) supposed to reflect the power and determination of Republican Florence. With this mystical figure Michelangelo proved to his contemporaries that he not only surpassed all modern artists, but also the Greeks and Romans, by infusing formal beauty with powerful expressiveness and meaning. The permanent collection also includes pieces ranging from 13th-century paintings to antique musical instruments from the Medici and Lorenesi collections, and there are temporary exhibitions throughout the year.
