The small town of Rocca Canterano hosts the unusual annual Festa del Cornuto, which celebrates betrayed spouses throughout the world.
In Italian the expression fare le corna, literally "making horns on someone", refers to extramarital dalliance. The cornuto, or horned one, celebrated in the festival is the unfortunate husband or wife whose spouse is dallying.
The unusually-themed celebration features allegorical floats, on which costumed actors recite ironic compositions aimed at unfortunate victims of infidelity past and present.
Every year an unofficial patroness of the celebration is elected. A favourite in recent years has been Hillary Clinton, but who knows who the next holder will be?
For the gastronomes out there, an added attraction is the simultaneous Festa delle Role, featuring huge quantities of roasted chestnuts that are handed out liberally to visitors. There are stands loaded with local specialities, and as the day progresses there is singing, dancing and general merriment.
