Easter celebrations in the Sicilian town of Gangi involve various rituals and processions throughout the Holy Week, though the most interesting event happens on Easter Sunday, when an unusual rivalry between saints takes place.
Devotees of the Madonna compete against those who venerate Jesus. The peaceful competition consists of creating the best decorations in the streets in the centre of town, near the Duomo. They assume the shape of arches, bizarrely constructed of bread, vegetables and other foodstuffs.
