Duino, a small tourist village 20km from Trieste, is dominated by its 700 year-old medieval castle. Built on a promontory overhanging the sea, the building is a collage of different architectural styles in a stunning setting, surrounded by a magnificent garden.
Over the years the castle has hosted such luminaries as the Italian poets Dante Alighieri and Gabriele D'Annunzio, and in 1912 Rainer Maria Rilke wrote one of his most important poems, the Duino Elegies, here. A famous legend has it that a medieval lord of the castle threw his wife out of a window at the top of one of the towers. The ghost of the White Lady apparently still haunts the castle and people say that light can be seen from outside on stormy nights...
Please note that in winter the castle is open at weekends only.
