In Bordonaro during Epiphany, locals erect a Pagghiaru, a very special Epiphany tree covered with fruit and bread, with a two-metre-high cross on top, all up for grabs after Mass!
The Epiphany in Bordonaro, as in other Sicilian villages and towns, marks the end of the Christmas festive season and is taken very seriously indeed. After the evening mass, crowds of young people in the main public square literally assault the tree to get at the delicacies suspended at the top.
The fantastic food bonanza is followed by a theatrical performance of Cavaddazzu e l'omu sabbagghiu, which translates from the Sicilian dialect as "Man and Ferocious Nature".
The events take place in the evening, but please check with the local tourist office for the exact times.
