Designed for the Medici family after they bought Palazzo Pitti in 1549, the Boboli Gardens in Florence are an excellent example of stylised Renaissance gardening.
First opened to the public in 1766, today visitors can see the oval garden with the famous Isoletto, an island of lemon trees and sculptures that includes the statue of Oceanus. Other features include Buontalenti's great grotto containing Giambologna's Venus, Michelangelo's four Slaves and the 17th-century amphitheatre, which still hosts music and theatrical performances.
