Alberobello is situated upon two hills, once separated by a riverbed. On the eastern hill is the new town, with modern architectural features; on the other hilltop, to the west, are the trulli, which are lined up in an urban conglomeration, subdivided into two districts: Monti and Aia Piccola, both UNESCO World Heritage sites today.
The trulli are limestone dwellings found in the southern region of Puglia, which are remarkable examples of drywall (mortarless) construction, a prehistoric building technique still in use in this region. Since the birth of Alberobello, the local rock has been used for the trulli roof covering. The trulli are made of roughly-worked limestone boulders collected from neighbouring fields. Characteristically, they feature pyramidal, domed or conical roofs built of limestone slabs.
