The Drogheda Samba Festival proves that Irish dancing skills go beyond line dancing and the odd ceilidh. Visiting international stars join local talent for a three-day party.
Hip-hop, bossa nova, reggae, jazz, African and classical percussion have been added to the festival programme over the years. Along with the workshops and classes, there's dancing and music-making day and night to make this a "Rio on the Boyne". Of course, there's also the obligatory, gloriously costumed, carnival parade and street party at the end of it all.
Drogheda, perched on the east coast of Ireland, may not quite have the sultry skies of samba's first home, but we can guarantee the town will be working up a pretty good heat of its own!
