St Stephen's Day in Dublin (26 December) is the first day of Leopardstown's most famous race meeting, the Christmas Festival, which lasts for four days.
St Stephen is the patron saint of horses, so it is fitting that this day has become synonymous with both racing and hunting. The Leopardstown races are National Hunt races and jockeys, trainers and owners use the meeting as preparation for the Cheltenham Gold Cup.
The first race meeting here was held in 1888, and more than 50,000 Dubliners gathered, including the Viceroy and the Marquis of Londonderry. The course now has 23 meetings a year for both flat and National Hunt races.
