The Casino at Marino, three miles from Dublin's heart, is an 18th-century folly built by the "Volunteer Earl" - Lord Charlemont. This nobleman developed a passion for all things Italian during his epic nine years on the Grand Tour.
Lord Charlemont lived in Naples, met a number of famous architects on his travels and returned home to Dublin where he made himself useful attempting to improve the social and economic conditions of his beloved homeland. In the 1750s he commissioned Sir William Chambers (architect of Somerset House in London and the Chapel in Trinity College, Dublin) to build him a Palladian pleasure villa in the highest of Neo-classical styles. The result is the very special Casino at Marino.
