The Medical Museum at Nesstofa is part of the National Museum of Iceland, but is operated as a separate entity. A specialist museum on the history of medicine, it also serves as a centre for the conservation of objects relating to medical history.

Between May and September only, the museum is open on certain days during the week. At other times of year it can be accessed by arrangement only.

The museum is located in Nesstofa, one of Iceland's oldest stone buildings, built in 1761-1763 for the country's first Surgeon General, Bjarni Pálsson. The house has been partly renovated and restored to its original state and this is where the museum's exhibitions are shown.

Objects from the 19th century and the first part of the 20th century are on display, including various items related to medical training, tapeworms, ophthalmology, phlebotomy, lymphatic medicine and more. If that's your cup of tea, you can also visit Iceland's oldest pharmacy.
