The restored Great Market Hall in Pest has three levels of bustle and atmosphere. Paprika, goose liver and vegetables are piled high. Upstairs are folklore products, souvenirs and snack bars. Downstairs are fish so fresh they're swimming.
Each central district of Budapest has a colourful and lively food market, but this has to be the pick of the bunch. Beneath the tiled roof, browse the stalls selling fresh vegetables, cheese and meat, and pity the carp as they await being picked out of tanks for Sunday dinner.
