While the old Pest (on the east of the Danube) is rather flat, it's western counterpart, Buda, is hilly and a fine place to escape the hustle and bustle of city life. Take a walk, or even one of the various trains, and explore János Hill, Sváb Hill, Széchényi Hill and Hármashatár Hill - Buda's hills.
From Szilágyi Erzsébet Avenue, take the cogwheel railway (Fogaskereku) up to Széchényi Hill and have a look at the villas on the way. In winter it transports skiers up to Budapest's only ski run, the Normafa.
The Children's Railway (Gyermekvasútas) is operated by children, with only the actual train drivers adults, and it is an ideal way to see the forests up to Hüvösvölgy via János Hill.
The panorama of Budapest is exceptional if you take the chairlift (Libegõ) 226 metres up from Zugliget to János Hill. From there you can take great photos and then sit back and watch the city unfold as you glide effortlessly towards the sky.
