Fiesta of San Juan Batista
When: Jun 2008 (annual)
Where: Trujillo
The Fiesta de San Juan Batista takes place in the oldest and one of the prettiest towns of Honduras, Trujillo. Christopher Columbus himself graced its shores in 1502, although it was not officially founded until 23 years later.

Each town or village in Honduras has its own fiesta patronale: a festival to commemorate their own patron saint. Although there is only one specific saint's day, the anniversary usually gives rise to a week of carnival, parades and music making.

Trujillo was made one of the first Catholic bishoprics in the country and has remained an important religious centre to this day. Although much of the old colonial architecture in the town is crumbling, having suffered from repeated attacks by pirates, a few of the old churches have survived. It is surrounded by beautiful sandy beaches and coconut groves and is a particular favourite of travellers, despite complaints of crime on the beaches in recent years.

Please note: proceed with caution in Honduras as some parts of the country have been known to be dangerous.
