The Fiesta de San Isidro is one of the best of Honduras' many carnivals, taking place each year in La Ceiba in honour of the city's patron saint. Festivities last a week and feature lavishly-costumed parades, dawn-to-dusk music and dancing and a huge parade.
There is enthusiastic participation by the local Garifuna community, who came to the country from the West Indies and brought their own funky form of Caribbean music - punta rock. You will doubtless have ample chances to sample its delights during the course of the carnival.
La Ceiba itself is the country's busiest port, seeing the constant traffic of Honduras' favourite exports, pineapples and bananas. Cooled by the ocean winds, it is a pleasant place to stay. The surrounding landscape is spectacular - a narrow peninsula with turquoise seas to one side and the looming and imposing mountain range of Nombre de Dios on the other.
