Steeped in history and legend, Santorini's gently active volcano draws visitors in droves with its bizarre lunar landscape of sunken craters and sculpted lava formations. The black-lava island of Nea Kameni, the main volcano, can be reached by boat.
An island with a truly explosive history, the eruption of Santorini's volcano over 3000 years ago is said to have had a devastating effect on the Minoan civilisation. The cataclysmic event has even been linked to Plato's description of the lost island of Atlantis.
Today, visitors can take a short cruise to Nea Kameni to stroll around the crater, see sulphur escaping through the lava rock and admire the views of Santorini's clifftop villages. Some trips include a stop at Palea Kameni hot springs, where you can take a dip in the thermal waters.
