Lindos, in the east of Rhodes island, is one of the prettiest villages in Greece, and has many important archaeological monuments.

The unusual houses in the modern village are built around courtyards and have elaborate black-and-white pebble mosaics. The ancient site has an impressive acropolis where you can visit the classical temple of Athena Lindia and the long Hellensitic stoa, a collonaded walkway used for meeting friends, shopping and conducting business out of the hot sun.

Below the acropolis, hollowed out of the hillside, is the ancient theatre, seating 1800 spectators. The cemeteries surrounding the site have some interesting monuments, including the Archokrateion, which held funerary altars and burials. Several later (Byzantine and medieval) churches can also be seen at Lindos.
