In Kolonaki, the Goulandris Museum of Cycladic Art is revered for its collection of elegant marble figurines. Surprisingly contemporary in style, these enigmatic pieces were placed in burial chambers in the Cycladic islands over 4,000 years ago.
This museum is interesting and accessible to everyone, even those who know little about archaeology. The elegant figurines, mostly female with their arms folded over their waists, appeal to modern aesthetic tastes and are presented in displays which illustrate Cycladic life at the time.
The museum also houses a collection of Greek art from the Bronze Age to Roman periods including pottery, terracotta figurines, sculpture, metal and glassware, jewellery and coins. Temporary exhibitions, often dedicated to contemporary artists, are regularly held at the museum, as are educational events.
When the temperature rises in Athens and the crowds are getting to you, this museum offers a haven of cool, calm rooms filled with ancient wonders.
