The annual Festival in the Shadow of the Rocks is held in the beautiful outdoor Theatre of the Rocks "Melina Merkouri". Drama groups from all over Greece perform a varied selection of ancient comedy and tragedy along with more modern productions.
Melina Merkouri, actress and politician, has become something of an icon for contemporary Greece. Having fought against the dictatorship from abroad, she returned to Greece to be appointed Minister of Culture and campaigned for the return of the Parthenon marbles, currently at the British Museum in London, until her death in 1994.
