The Islamic Museum in Athens, part of the Benaki Museum, has relocated to a bigger building for a better viewing experience. The neoclassical complex houses works from India, Persia, Asia Minor, the Middle East, Northern Africa, Sicily and Spain.
More than 8000 items of pottery, metalwork, wood carving and weaponry are on display. The internal marble decoration of a 17th-century mansion hall from Cairo documents the continuity of Islamic history from pre-Islamic to Ottoman times, as well as the development of Islamic art until the 19th century.
