Occupying a neo-classical house in Kolonaki, the Benaki Museum offers a walk through the history of Greek art from 3000 BC up to the 20th century. Laid out in chronological order, exhibits include jewellery, ceramics, sculpture, paintings, furniture and costumes.
The Benaki Museum was founded in 1930 with the collections of Antonis Benakis and other donors. This landmark is the best place in the city for a lesson in the historical and cultural development of Hellenism.
On display are 33,000 works ranging from antiquity and the age of Roman domination to the creation of the modern Greek state. History buffs can view pieces from the fall of Constantinople and the years of Frankish and Ottoman occupation.
The new annex at Piraeus Street has been attracting a younger generation of museum goers. It's equipped with the latest technology, multiple exhibition spaces, an amphitheatre, a café and the Museum Shop.
Please visit the museum's website for more details on temporary exhibitions and other events.
