Archaeological remains from the prehistoric to medieval periods can be seen at ancient Ialysos in the north of Rhodes island.
Cemeteries with Mycenaean-style tombs are among the earliest important discoveries here. From the Archaic period onwards (6th century BC) there was a city on the site, and you can see the ruins of the temple of Athena Polias (3rd-2nd century BC but built over an earlier, Classical temple) and of a fountain house.
Later buildings include an early Christian basilica and 14th-century church (the Knights' period) with vaulted roof and two hexagonal chapels.
For anyone interested in history, archaeology or architecture, Ialysos is not to be missed.
