The Moorish Castle in Gibraltar was built in the 8th century. Covering a large part of what is now known as the Rock, most of the old structure is in ruins. However, it's still possible to visit the Tower of Homage (upper tower), various terraces and battlements below it and the large Gate House (with a cupola roof).

The Tower of Homage is the highest tower of the Islamic period in the Iberian Peninsula, and was rebuilt during the second Moorish occupation in the early 14th century. The castle itself played a prominent part in the Arab conquest of the Iberian Peninsula, an invasion which led to Arab domination over part of Europe for more than seven centuries.
