The medieval Marksburg castle in Braubach, located on the bank of the River Rhine, is one of just a few in the area that have never been destroyed, giving a stunning insight into the life in the Middle Ages.
Since its construction in the 12th century, the Marksburg has grown into its present shape throughout succeeding centuries. In the Middle Ages the castle's defences were strengthened, making it a bastion that was never seriously attacked. In more peaceful times, it was used as a state prison. Today the site is home to a whole range of artefacts from medieval times.
Climb the narrow path up the hill and tour the castle with a guide speaking German, English or Japanese. Afterwards, sit in the cosy Burgschaenke restaurant and enjoy the magnificent view over the picturesque Rhine Valley.
Throughout the year special events take place, such as knight's banquets, where traditional food is prepared and served in the romantic hall by staff in medieval costumes. Please contact the castle association for dates and further information.
