A hundred thousand people fill the cobbled streets of the old town in Hochheim am Main, near Frankfurt, for the annual Wine Festival, the largest in the region.
With its location near the famous vineyards of the Rheingau, it's hardly surprising that Hochheim's 50 year-old festival attracts 170 stands offering predominantly white wines and Sekt (sparkling wine). Numerous craft stands abound, while typical fairground rides offer a break from wine tasting.
Two stages offer song and dance in the early evenings, and the high point of the festivities comes on Saturday evening at 8pm with the crowning of the wine queen. For more pretty local girls, amble over to the main stage on Sunday evening when the wine princesses from towns all over the Rheingau make their appearance. A fireworks show closes out the festival on Monday evening.
