The splendid four-day Carnival of Cultures street festival celebrates Berlin's multicultural spirit with music and dancing in the city's Kreuzberg district.
Established in 1996, the event has a great community and party atmosphere, and is a definite must-see if you are in town. Since its inception, it has become an integral part of the culture of Berlin and for a short time infuses a riot of colours into the city's often-grey facades.
The carnival began as a street parade of masqueraders, musicians, dancers, DJs and artists and has now escalated into a slickly impressive extravaganza with a great programme both on and off-stage.
Carnival groups from more than 70 countries dance through the streets of Kreuzberg, Berlin's most international district. Exotic food and drinks add to the atmosphere and you'll find it hard to believe you are so far from the equator. Around half a million people turn out to enjoy the activities around Blücherplatz and the main parade down Gneisenaustrasse.
