Don't leave Berlin before trying the local delicacy: the Berliner Currywurst sausage. The city's original fast food can still be found in traditional snack bars such as Curry 36, Konnopkes Imbiss, Witty's and Currywurst Berlin and Friends.

The classic big sausage is served, temptingly, either with or without bowels (mit/ohne Darm) and owes its name to the added spicy ketchup-curry sauce. It is normally accompanied by chips - Pommes in German - or a plain roll (Schrippe). To make the meal perfect, have some Fluessig Brot (liquid bread) with it, as the local beer is called.

Herta Heuwer was the inventor of this snack combination and is officially honored with a memorial in Berlin's Charlottenburg district (Kantstrasse 101), where her snack bar used to be. History says that it was only an accident that led to the mixture of ketchup, curry powder and sausage - because the general shortage of food didn't allow anything to be thrown away, the currywurst was born.
