Alexanderplatz, located in the central district of Mitte, is Berlin's most important square. Characterised by its 1960s architecture, it is home to cinemas, shops and the famous Fernsehturm (TV tower).
Alexanderplatz was originally located outside of the city walls and was used as a marketplace for the sale of animals. It was named after the Russian Tsar Alexander II on the occasion of his visit in 1805.
Its urban architecture includes the 123-metre high Hotel Park Inn. In 1969, the World Time Clock was erected, along with the Fountain of International Friendship. Most recently, a new cinema complex was built in the middle. Plans for the reconstruction of the square, including the building of 13 skyscrapers, have existed since 1993, so watch this space
Alexanderplatz isn't the most beautiful attraction but nonetheless it is not to be missed. Take a wander round, watch the locals going about their daily business and visit the main attractions like the Berlin TV tower, Red Town Hall, Marienkirche church and Neptune Fountain.
