The birthplace of William the Conqueror, Falaise, lights up for an annual festive experience.

This small Normandie town is notable for having spawned the man who won the Battle of Hastings. Known in these parts as William the Bastard, the Conqueror was the offspring of the Duke of Normandy and a washerwoman called Arlette.

His birthplace was all but destroyed during the Second World War, but the town puts on a good show for Christmas with illuminations in every shop window, a festive craft market (11 December), choir singing, a Christmas Ball, and events in medieval costume in front of the castle.
