The inhabitants of Mourjou en Chataigneraie claim that their little village is chestnut central. The Foire à la Châtaigne, or Chesnut Festival, is a big affair, with people flocking from across the region and lots of nutty things to do.
Come early to make the most of three tonnes of nuts and 6000 litres of cider. Visitors can eat chestnuts, check out the exhibitions, take the chestnut discovery trip, or even join in with the harvest.
Chestnuts have been grown in the area for years, but traditional growth and harvesting were gravely threatened by more intensive forms of agriculture. Fortunately, the locals have saved the trees and boosted their heritage.
