Chestnut fever hits Southern Corsica every December with this fair in Bocognano, which draws crowds of up to 30,000. Although its official aim is the promotion and development of local agriculture, the delights of chestnut biscuits, jam, sweets and even alcohol are enticing to all.
Based around the seasonal chestnut, the fair highlights not only a revival in Corsican nut production but also the developments in rural produce from around the Ile de Beauté, as it is known to its inhabitants.
The major event of the festival is a competition to judge the year's finest chestnut flour. While this may not be of massive interest to visitors, the sampling of cakes and deserts made from the flour may be more tempting.
