Cherry trees proliferate over the slopes of the Vosges mountains. Every year the village of Fougerolles holds a Cherry Beignet and Kirsch Fair to celebrate the incredibly delicious beignets (doughnuts) and kirsch that are made from the fruit.
During the festival, a very select group of individuals also convenes in the town. This is the Chapter of the Brotherhood of the Master Tasters of Cherry Liqueur, or le Chapitre de la Confrerie des Gousteurs de l'Eau de Cerise, to give it its much more elegant French title.
With plenty of free food and drink on hand, it's not surprising that up to 10,000 people turn up to the event each year. The fair features plenty of folkloric musical entertainment, arts and crafts stalls and local delicacies to tuck into, including the gandoeuillot, a meat speciality.
You can't get anywhere near the French mindset until you understand their obsession with food, and this is as good a place as any to start.
