Towering above the pine forests at over 1000 metres on a granite plateau, the ancient town of La Chaise-Dieu is the venue for one of the most well-established classical music festivals in France, founded in 1967.

The programme of the festival features chamber music from the baroque period, devotional and religious music and modern classical interpretations, with the vast majority of the concerts held in the town's Benedictine abbey.

Classical music buffs will be pleased by the range and quality of musical offerings - and there is miles of pine forest to ramble through during the day. Pre-booking is not essential - you should be able to pick up your ticket from the tourist office or the venue an hour before the performance.
