Senate Square and its surroundings form a fine example of Neoclassical architecture. It is dominated by four buildings designed by Engel: Helsinki Cathedral, the Government Palace, the main building of the University of Helsinki and the National Library of Finland.
The square is also the place for many celebrations, including the annual summer festival, New Year parties and 6 December celebrations.
